Waterloo SE1

There are plenty of boards in this area of London, but only one really decent venue - perfect for anyone looking for a game of darts between visits to the Tate Modern and the National Theatre.

Recommended pubs

  • Stamford Arms 62 Stamford Street
    SE1 9LX

Head and shoulders above any other option in the area, run by a landlord who plays proper darts. There's a board downstairs for everyday use, and a second oche upstairs available for hire (and a spare board behind the bar). According to extremely helpful staff, the landlord was prevented from playing in the World Championship qualifiers one year as his wife went into labour.

  • Other pubs

  • Albert Arms 1 Gladstone Street
    SE1 6EY

Presumably popular with students from London South Bank University, it’s a cosy looking place, but chairs need to be moved to get to the board.

  • Crown & Cushion 133 Westminster Bridge Road
    SE1 7HR

In a fantastic location, and should be a wonderful pub, but could do with a total re-fit and re-think. A table often obstructs the board and oche.

  • Duke of Sussex 23 Bayliss Road
    SE1 7AY

Edge of estate pub with board in the back bar hidden by a curtain; not a highlight of the area.

  • Lambeth Walk 17 Lambeth Road
    SE1 7DG

Rough, dark, smelly, contains a toothless landlady and a permanently unused dart board. Can't see this place staying open for much longer - presuming it hasn't closed already (the phone appears to have been disconnected).

  • Lord Nelson 243 Union Street
    SE1 0LR

Funky little boozer who's interior is incongruous with the external appearance. The board can only be used with prior arrangement, as it requires moving a few tables, but they have teams over the winter.

  • Stage Door 30 Webber Street
    SE1 8QA

Nice enough bar, but there are tables in the way of the board at busy times.

  • Stamfords Wine Bar 7/8 Milroy Walk
    SE1 9LW

A wine bar with a dart board. Honest. A most peculiar place to play darts, to be born in mind only if total desperation looms.

  • Steam Engine 41 Cosser Street
    SE1 7BU

Peculiarly doubles up as a Youth Hostel; seats obstruct the board.
