City EC2 EC4

The financial district; crazy on weekdays, closed at weekends (including some of the pubs). Nearby areas: Aldgate, Clerkenwell & Farringdon, Kings Cross & Holborn.

Recommended pubs

  • Arbitrager 27a Throgmorton Street
    EC2N 2AN

Assuming you manage to find the place – which is a skill in itself - don’t be put off by the tiny ground floor bar; head downstairs and there are two boards, one of which is in very good nick and used regularly by their team.

  • City Tavern 29-30 Lawrence Lane
    EC2V 8DP

The boards were not in great shape when visited, but there were two of them in the downstairs games bar, so mustn't grumble.

  • Hoop and Grapes 80 Farringdon Street
    EC4A 4BL

Extremely accommodating, although needs to be as the board is two floors up in a section of the pub that is often roped off. However, and it's a big however, staff are willing to use the dumb waiter as a beer lift to save trips up and down the stairs, so worth visiting (or more realistically hiring) just to see the carnage likely to follow.

  • Porters Lodge 17 Arthur Street
    EC4R 9BR

Darting heaven just near the Monument, with 7 (count them) boards in total. Genial landlord, an in-house individual league, and teams in four different leagues give credence to the claim that this is the mecca of central London darts.

  • Other pubs

  • City Retreat 74 Shoe Lane
    EC4A 3BQ

Tables and chairs usually block the oche, but affable staff are familiar with moving them for the team that plays there.

  • Flying Horse 52 Wilson Street
    EC2A 2ER

Entrance to the upstairs bar is via an unmarked door on the right of the entrance. Inside is an out-of-condition board, in a room that will almost certainly be your own; a little grotty, but a perfectly acceptable reserve venue.

  • Sea Horse 64 Queen Victoria Street
    EC4N 4SJ

Tiny pub where you wouldn't expect to find a board, but there's a perfectly reasonable oche to the right of the bar. Board is bookable. Got thrashed last time I played there.
